According to AFP, the Russian airstrikes on the border, including drone strikes targeting a train heading to Warsaw and a forward checkpoint, were assessed by both countries as a serious "escalation" in the conflict.

Ukraine's state railway operator said that former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former CIA Director David Petraeus were both at a nearby station around the time the train was hit by gunfire. This Russian border strike immediately raised deep concerns about the extent of the risk of widespread damage, especially since the targets were located so close to the territory of a NATO member state.

Notably, the drone strikes occurred amidst calls from US President Donald Trump for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop targeting the country's oil refineries.

Trump argued that these operations were causing a global shortage of diesel fuel and stressed that "there are many other targets." Despite these warnings, Ukrainian forces have continued to escalate attacks on the enemy's oil refining infrastructure.

On the Russian side, the Ministry of Defense stated that, in response to Ukrainian attacks, the Russian military targeted decision-making centers, businesses, and warehouses used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces in conjunction with NATO specialists. Fighter jets, using attack drones and high-precision long-range weapons, were able to destroy any target both in Kyiv and throughout Ukraine.

The drone strike targeting western Ukraine on September 13th occurred just days after U.S. envoys traveled to both Kyiv and Moscow, a trip that carried hopes of restarting negotiations to end Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II.
