Russia: The US is looking for an excuse to increase pressure on Iran

Mr. Ryabkov pointed out that Washington's use of the Iran nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), to exert pressure is an inappropriate measure for a great power.

According to Russia's observations, the US is looking for an excuse to increase pressure on Iran for reasons unrelated to the JCPOA, said the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.

Mr. Ryabkov compared this action of the US to “robbery and shouting at the same time.” Mr. Ryabkov said that Moscow considers any unilateral sanctions to be illegal.

Ryabkov made the statement after the US expanded its sanctions list related to Iran. Five Iranian companies were fined for “being involved in the country’s missile program.” In addition, US Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin said the US “will continue to firmly oppose the Iranian regime’s extremely harmful actions, including additional sanctions for human rights violations.”
