In a statement, the Russian military announced that the frigate Admiral Essen and the submarine Krasnodar had carried out four attacks against heavy weapons and ISIS fighters who had left their stronghold of Raqa for Palmyra. The statement said: “All targets were hit.” However, the statement did not specify when the attacks were conducted.

Moscow officials said that the US, Turkish, and Israeli militaries "were notified in a timely manner of the missile launches through existing communication channels."

The Kremlin said that Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu had briefed President Vladimir Putin on the successful attacks.

Russia began its air campaign in 2015 to support Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and deployed a naval force on the eastern Mediterranean coast to bolster its firepower. However, in recent months, Moscow has not announced any attacks from the sea, as it focuses on promoting a fragile ceasefire between the government and rebels.
