Russia says the current ceasefire in Ukraine is unrealistic.
Russia's representative at the United Nations said that a ceasefire in Ukraine is unrealistic at this stage.
According to RIA Novosti on April 18, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, Vasily Nebenzya, told journalists after a closed-door consultation of the UN Security Council that a ceasefire in Ukraine is not yet realistic.
"We have made efforts to establish a limited ceasefire related to energy infrastructure, but the Ukrainian side has not complied. In these circumstances, talking about a ceasefire at this stage is completely unrealistic," Representative Nebenzya said.
Commenting on the need to formalize potential agreements between Russia and Ukraine at the UN Security Council, the diplomat noted that everything would depend on the conditions of any potential ceasefire and the wording in the document.
"We have a resolution calling for an end to the conflict, adopted at the initiative of the United States. Let's see exactly what needs to be done at the Security Council, if we reach any agreement. It all depends on the conditions of a possible ceasefire and the language of the document," Nebenzya said.
On March 18, during a conversation with his American counterpart Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin responded positively to the idea of the parties in the conflict jointly refraining from attacks on energy infrastructure for 30 days and ordered the military to implement this. On the Ukrainian side, President Volodymyr Zelensky also pledged support for the proposal.
On March 24, a meeting of experts from Russia and the United States took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, lasting more than 12 hours. At the meeting, the parties agreed to temporarily halt attacks on energy facilities in Russia and Ukraine.
According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, Ukraine has been violating the agreement daily since then, despite public statements supporting the Russian-American agreement to end such attacks.
Russian President Vladimir Putin's press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, stated that Kyiv did not actually participate in the ceasefire on infrastructure.
