According to a statement issued by the FSB on August 10, the Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense plans to attack critical infrastructure on the Crimean Peninsula.
In a special operation last weekend, the FSB discovered a group of infiltrators in the town of Armyansk in northern Crimea, near the Ukrainian border. A shootout ensued before the group was apprehended. One FSB officer was killed in the operation.
At the scene, the FSB found 20 improvised explosive devices equivalent to more than 40kg of TNT, along with various weapons, ammunition, and body armor that were used by Ukrainian army special forces.
On August 8, Russia also detected and thwarted two planned attacks by Ukrainian terrorist groups. The FSB stated that Ukrainian armored vehicles provided support to the terrorist groups. One Russian soldier was also killed in the operation.
A spy network belonging to the Ukrainian Intelligence Service has been uncovered in Crimea, including both Ukrainian and Russian citizens. The network was tasked with assisting in the preparation of terrorist attacks. The suspects are currently being questioned.
The FSB statement claimed that the sabotage and terrorist acts discovered were aimed at destabilizing the political and social situation in Crimea ahead of local and federal elections. Meanwhile, the Chief of General Staff of Ukraine called the FSB report a provocation. A spokesperson for the Ukrainian Intelligence Service also rejected all of the FSB's accusations, calling them "fake" information.
Security has been tightened on the Crimean Peninsula. Security forces have been reinforced at key infrastructure sites, crowded areas, and along the Russia-Ukraine border.
