Russia unveils intelligent sniper rifle.
Russia surprised the West by announcing it had developed a sniper rifle with guided projectiles and an intelligent aiming system.
Smart guns
The Foundation for Advanced Research (FPI) is conducting research and development on smart sights and sniper rifles with guided projectiles. These new projectiles possess exceptional properties: they can penetrate steel and have a range of up to 10 km, according to FPI Director General Andrey Grigoriev.
In combat, using sniper rifles to hit moving targets is a top priority, especially at relatively long distances.
"Sniper rifles with guided projectiles made from two or more metals are capable of penetrating steel and have a long range. We have designed smart sights, rifles with guided projectiles, and many other modern weapons," Grigoriev said.

In June 2015, Vitaly Davydov, Deputy General Director of FPI, announced that Russia had conducted tests of "smart ammunition" with a range of up to 10 km. For high accuracy, shooters need to get closer to the target, which means greater danger.
Thus, the successful research and testing of this new type of ammunition will enable Russian infantry to complete their mission of destroying enemy forces and ensuring their own safety.
Specializing in armored vehicle repairs.
Along with developing intelligent sniper rifles, Russia has also successfully researched and produced heavy sniper rifles capable of easily countering enemy armored forces.
According to Izvestia, citing sources from the Russian Ministry of Defense on October 15, a new generation of heavy sniper rifles, codenamed KSV, is under development and will be deployed to the Russian armed forces by 2020.
The KSV, using 23mm ammunition, will be deployed to special reconnaissance units within the structure of mechanized infantry regiments. The main task of the KSV gunner is to neutralize armored vehicles (with 15cm thick armor) from a distance of over 2,000m and enemy man-portable air defense missile systems.
The KSV rifle was developed by the Instrument Design Complex in Tula, a subsidiary of the state-owned Rostec corporation. Detailed technical and tactical information about the KSV rifle has not yet been released.
The Izvestia newspaper reported: "Currently, the development of the KSV rifle is at the design stage. A new prototype of the sniper rifle will soon be introduced and participate in national testing before being mass-produced. This process will take approximately 2-3 years."
