Russia continues shelling Bakhmut, Ukraine launches fierce counterattack.
The Ukrainian General Staff announced on March 2 that Russian forces continued shelling Bakhmut while Ukrainian forces attempted to repel ongoing attacks near the key eastern city and surrounding areas in Donetsk.
"They are launching a massive offensive against Bakhmut," the Ukrainian General Staff emphasized. CNN previously cited sources from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) as also stating that Russian forces "have advanced inside Bakhmut and are continuing ground attacks around the city."

According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, over the past 24 hours, Russian forces have carried out missile attacks on the city of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region, located 5 km west of Bakhmut and Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine stated: “The threat of missile attacks is increasing throughout Ukraine.” However, Russia was unsuccessful in its attacks towards Kupyansk and Lyman. In the direction of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, Russia shelled more than 40 settlements, the ministry noted.
Ukrainian forces have launched 13 retaliatory attacks in the past 24 hours on areas containing Russian military personnel and equipment. Ukrainian missile and artillery units also attacked a Russian ammunition depot. Russia has not yet commented on Ukraine's claims.
