Russia equips Su-34 bombers with the Sych reconnaissance system.
The Sych passive electronic reconnaissance system enables the Su-34 to detect Patriot air defense radars from a distance of 500km and transmit real-time combat data.
The Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) have begun equipping their Su-34 frontline bombers with Sych reconnaissance and navigation systems manufactured by UKR-RT. This is a significant step in enhancing the electronic warfare and long-range reconnaissance capabilities of the Russian fighter aircraft fleet.

Advanced passive electronic reconnaissance technology
The Sych system is specifically designed for passive electronic reconnaissance missions. Mounted on the central pylon of the Su-34 aircraft, it allows for the detection, tracking, and classification of the operating modes of enemy radio transmitters.
Sych's capabilities include recording the activity of ground-based and naval radar stations, aircraft-mounted radars, as well as communications equipment and actively guided missile warheads. Importantly, the collected information is transmitted in real time to other aircraft in the formation, creating an effective operational data sharing network.

Tactical advantage and operational range
Compared to dedicated reconnaissance aircraft like the Tu-214R, the Su-34 version equipped with a reconnaissance system (often called the Su-34R) has the ability to reach combat patrol areas approximately 1.5 times faster. This allows the air force to deploy urgent reconnaissance missions more flexibly.
The UKR-RT system utilizes passive interferometric phased array antennas, capable of determining the orientation and analyzing all operating modes of radio transmitting targets. Notable technical specifications include:
- Detection range:Up to 500km for the Patriot air defense system radar when the aircraft is operating at an altitude above 12.5km.
- Targeting capability:Provides precise coordinates for attack weapons.
- Mobility:The Su-34's rapid production and deployment speed allows it to maintain a continuous presence on the battlefield.
The successful integration of the Sych system onto the Su-34 not only enables the aircraft to perform its traditional bomber role effectively but also makes it a crucial link in the Russian military's remote reconnaissance and target designation system.
