Russia's new TOS-3 Dragon thermobaric system has appeared on the front lines with an upgraded range of up to 24km and a specialized protection system against UAV threats.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has just released the first images of the TOS-3 Dragon heavy thermobaric flamethrower system in operation on the front lines. First introduced in 2024, the TOS-3 Dragon is the latest advancement in Russia's thermobaric weapon system, designed to address core limitations in range and survivability that existed in its predecessors.

Improved design and long-range firepower.

The most notable change on the TOS-3 Dragon is the redesign of the launch module. Compared to the TOS-1A Solntsepyok system, which used 24 guidance tubes, the TOS-3 has reduced the number to 15. However, this reduction in ammunition capacity is offset by the use of new missiles with significantly longer ranges.

Technical reports indicate that the TOS-3 is capable of engaging targets at distances of 15 to 24 km. This is a significant upgrade over the TOS-1A, which had a maximum range of only about 6 km and required direct line-of-sight operation, making it vulnerable to counter-fire and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Enhancing defense capabilities against UAVs.

In the context of the increasing prevalence of attack UAVs, Russia has equipped the TOS-3 Dragon with multi-layered protection. The system incorporates Kontakt-5 explosive reactive armor, supplementing the basic armor of the T-72 tank chassis. Additionally, the vehicle is fitted with a homemade anti-UAV armor (cage armor), a double-layer mesh screen protecting the launch tubes, and the Volnorez electronic warfare system to suppress enemy UAV control signals.

Shifts in combat doctrine

The development of the TOS-3 Dragon demonstrates a shift in the Russian military's approach to thermobaric weapons. Previously, the TOS-1A required close proximity to the front lines to fire, creating significant risks within the UAV's "kill zones." The introduction of the TOS-2 Tosochka, with a range of 15km on a wheeled chassis, improved mobility but lacked the robust protection of tank armor.

The TOS-3 Dragon appears to combine the protective capabilities of a tracked chassis with the long-range capabilities of new ammunition. This allows the system to be deployed from more remote positions far from the front lines, increasing its survivability in modern warfare environments. However, due to the limited number of actual deployments, the overall combat effectiveness of this system continues to be monitored and evaluated by military experts.
