On January 10, Viktor Bondarev, head of the Federation Council's Defense Committee, told Sputnik.
"Russia is expanding its nuclear potential based on today's realities and the general international political situation, and not in response to a specific attack or US statements," the Russian senator said.
Mr. Bondarev emphasized that the development of the Strategic Nuclear Forces (SNF) is a priority for the Russian Defense Ministry, also in connection with the new priorities of the State Armaments Program for 2018-2027.
The new State Program for the next decade plans to completely modernize the strategic missile complex. Topol will be replaced by the more modern and sophisticated Yars.
"Last year, we re-equipped three regiments of the Strategic Missile Forces, they were given Yars, and the aviation component of the Strategic Nuclear Forces received three upgraded aircraft," Bondarev said. "The development trend is rapid and stable."
