Russia and India are collaborating on modernizing the BrahMos cruise missile, focusing on compact variants and researching next-generation hypersonic weapon systems.

Russia and India are accelerating the modernization of their BrahMos cruise missile systems and researching next-generation hypersonic weapon systems. This is a strategic effort to maintain technological superiority and enhance the defensive capabilities of both nations' armed forces in the context of the new security landscape.

Aleksandr Leonov, General Director and Chief Designer of NPO Mashinostroyenia, affirmed that Russia is actively participating in the ongoing improvement of the performance of missile systems within the framework of the BrahMos joint venture project.

Developing compact variants and hypersonic technology.

Speaking at the Space Science Conference held in Reutov, a suburb of Moscow, on January 30, Leonov said the current focus is on developing compact missile variants. This allows the weapon to be more easily integrated onto a wider range of flexible launch platforms.

Notably, the project is also geared towards hypersonic weapons. This is a significant step forward since the BrahMos project was launched in 1998. After several testing phases, mass deliveries began in 2024 to all branches of the Indian armed forces, including the air force, army, and navy.

Combat performance and deterrence capabilities

The BrahMos is currently considered one of the world's leading supersonic cruise missiles. With a range of 290 to 400 km and a maximum speed of Mach 2.8, this weapon is capable of penetrating modern air defense systems thanks to its extremely high speed and complex flight trajectory.

Military experts consider the BrahMos to be an effective deterrent, offering high accuracy in attacking targets both at sea and on land. Its high speed not only increases its destructive power but also significantly reduces the enemy's reaction time.

Defense Self-Reliance and Export Strategy

Besides its defensive role, the BrahMos is also a major export item for India. New Delhi is promoting a strategy to strengthen domestic production capacity to reduce dependence on imports and expand its influence in the international arms market.

The Russian partner, NPO Mashinostroyenia, is renowned for its high-tech weapon systems such as the Zircon hypersonic missile, the Oniks cruise missile, and the Bastion coastal defense system. This collaboration ensures that the BrahMos missile system is continuously updated with the latest technologies from one of the world's leading arms manufacturers.
