Russia confirms Putin and Trump will have their first phone call.

The Kremlin and the White House hoped the phone call between leaders Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump would be a significant first step in thawing relations between the two countries, a situation stemming from the previous US administration, according to AP.

Critics of Trump will closely monitor the content of his dialogue with Russian President Putin after U.S. intelligence agencies accused Russia of cyberattacks aimed at influencing the New York tycoon's campaign in last year's presidential election.

Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Putin, confirmed the phone call would take place tomorrow, but provided no further details.

During the US presidential election campaign, both Putin and Trump praised each other's qualities and expressed hope for a renewed relationship.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov emphasized on January 25th that "time and serious work will be necessary to mend the Russia-US cooperative relationship."

"We have no illusions that relations with the US will enter a new era; we have no naive expectations. We know that Mr. Trump is considered a master negotiator, but Mr. Putin also knows very well how to negotiate for Russia's interests," Lavrov said.

The Russian Foreign Minister added that he hoped President Trump would not "interfere in the affairs of other countries" like the Obama administration.

"Reset" is a term coined by the Obama administration in 2009 to describe the trend toward mending relations with Russia. After a brief period of warmth, tensions flared between the two countries due to the Ukraine crisis, the war in Syria, and allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

Trump's victory and his promise to mend relations with Moscow have given Russian political elites optimism. However, the Kremlin remains cautious, warning that rebuilding relations will take time.
