Ngan Anh sparks controversy with her performance in traditional costume.
Her performance on the night of January 19th, where she turned her back to the audience, was deemed inappropriate.
On the evening of January 19th, Lê Âu Ngân Anh and the other contestants of Miss Intercontinental 2018 competed in the National Costume segment. Wearing an outfit inspired by Mother Âu Cơ, Ngân Anh turned her back to the audience and then slowly turned around. This appearance sparked controversy because the jumpsuit was too short, clearly revealing her buttocks on stage. On some forums, viewers commented that she lacked modesty.
Ngan Anh only had 30 seconds to perform, spending the first 10 seconds standing with her back to the audience. After that, she only managed two poses: hands on hips and raising both arms high. This was partly due to the stage being too short and small, limiting the contestant's performance space. The nearly 50 kg outfit also made it quite difficult for her to maintain balance during the catwalk.
Besides that, some viewers also commented that Ngan Anh's outfit was sexy and showcased her figure. The traditional costume was described as having details embellished with pearls, gold leaf, and 2 grams of real gold, symbolizing the noble bloodline of dragons and fairies. The top Ngan Anh wore featured a bronze drum motif that was hand-stitched over more than 180 hours.

Designer Ngo Manh Dong Dong shared the inspiration behind the design: "The 10 mythical bird wings symbolize 100 eggs and 100 chicks; each wing represents 10 Vietnamese children. The five wings on each side symbolize 50 children following their mother to the mountains and 50 children following their father to the sea. If there is foreign invasion, all 100 children will spread their wings together."
This year's Miss Intercontinental pageant has not been highly regarded, largely due to the contestants' lack of attractiveness and poor investment in their outfits and makeup. From the beginning of the season until now, Ngan Anh has yet to win any of the subsidiary awards. The Miss Intercontinental 2018 final will take place on January 27th in Manila, Philippines. After returning home, Ngan Anh faces a penalty from the Department of Performing Arts for participating without permission. She is also suing the Department for not granting her permission to compete internationally.
