"Cow bank" helps Quynh Tan farmers escape poverty
(Baonghean.vn) - With practical actions, the Farmers' Association of Quynh Tan commune, Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) has built a "Cow Bank", mobilizing members and farmers to save money to help poor households.
Implemented since 2013, the “Cow Bank” of the Farmers’ Association of Quynh Tan Commune, Quynh Luu District has not only attracted the participation of cadres and farmer members but also received the attention and support of cadres, civil servants and enterprises in the commune. Up to now, the whole commune has had 6 farming households receiving breeding cows to develop livestock farming, gradually escaping poverty.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thao and her husband in village 4, Quynh Tan commune are poor households; both of them are sick, often sick, the family's economy mainly depends on 2 sao of contracted rice fields, so life is very difficult. Understanding the family's situation, in August 2014, the Commune Farmers' Association helped them borrow breeding cows to improve their lives. In early 2015, the cow gave birth to 1 calf and is now giving birth to a second calf. Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thao happily boasted: "After only 2 years, my family has 2 calves and 1 mother cow. Now we will sell one calf to pay the Farmers' Association so that we have capital to continue helping other poor households."
For Ms. Ho Thi Hoan in village 7, Quynh Tan commune, her husband died early, she struggled to raise 3 small children alone, poverty always followed her family. In August 2014, the Commune Farmers' Association lent her a breeding cow and instructed her on how to care for it, she was determined to overcome the difficulties. Currently, her cow has given birth to a male calf. Ms. Ho Thi Hoan shared: "The cow not only has material value but also helps me regain my spirit. Raising cows is not too hard and expensive, my children can also help their mother cut grass to feed the cows, so far the family has escaped poverty".
Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha - Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Tan commune said that the idea of buying breeding cows to give to poor households was initiated by the District and Commune Farmers' Association in 2013. That year, in addition to 1 calf given by the District Association, the Commune Farmers' Association also mobilized its staff and members to save more than 10 million VND to buy another calf to give to a poor household in the commune.

In 2014, the Farmers' Association of Quynh Tan commune was facilitated by the Party Committee and the government to call for help from all cadres, party members and farmers in the area to raise 34 million VND to buy 3 breeding calves to give to 3 poor households. In 2015, the association continued to mobilize over 21 million VND to buy breeding cows to give to 2 more households; in the first 6 months of 2016, the association mobilized over 5 million VND and is currently focusing on recovering capital from households that borrowed before to buy more breeding calves to give to poor households.
Talking about the "Cow Bank" of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Tan Commune, Mr. To Van Thu - Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Luu District said: Thanks to the transparent way of doing things, the "Cow Bank" of the Farmers' Association of Quynh Tan Commune has received the support of a large number of union members, farmers, officials, civil servants, and benefactors in the area. This is one of the two leading units of the district with a total of 6 cows given, of which 3 households have escaped poverty thanks to the "Cow Bank" of the district.
