The World Bank is funding upgrades for 27 weak reservoirs in Nghe An province.
(Baonghean.vn) - With funding from the World Bank, Nghe An province is investing in upgrading 27 reservoirs and dams during the period from 2016 to 2022.
Currently, the province has over 625 reservoirs, 427 diversion dams, 701 electric pumping stations, 15 major drainage lines, and hundreds of large and small irrigation and drainage sluices. However, many reservoir structures have deteriorated and are no longer adequate for irrigation and drainage. To ensure reservoir safety and to serve irrigation, drainage, and water supply for economic sectors and people's daily lives, the province is implementing the "Dam Repair and Safety Improvement" project, funded by the World Bank (WB), to upgrade 27 reservoirs with a total budget of 517.24 billion VND.
Of that amount, the World Bank contributed over 490 billion VND, and the provincial budget provided 27 billion VND in matching funds.
The project is divided into four sub-projects: Sub-project 1: Repair, upgrade, and ensure the safety of Khe Gang reservoir (Ngoc Son commune, Quynh Luu district); Sub-project 2: Repair and upgrade of Khe San reservoir (Quynh Thang commune - Quynh Luu district); Sub-project 3: Repair of 13 reservoirs; and Sub-project 4: Repair and upgrade of 12 reservoirs in the province.

Sub-projects 1 and 2 are awaiting World Bank approval of the construction bidding results, with the construction contract expected to be awarded before July 20, 2018; construction and completion of the projects are expected before December 2019 (The construction portion of the Khe Gang and Khe San sub-projects is combined into one package consisting of two bidding lots).
According to the Director of the Project Management Board of the Agriculture and Rural Development sector, the two pilot sub-projects have already had materials stockpiled and land cleared. Construction will begin after the rainy season ends. Sub-project 3, comprising 13 reservoirs and dams, has completed its design and is expected to open for bidding at the end of this year. Sub-project 4 is currently selecting consultants to prepare a feasibility study report and safety policies, to be completed before November 30, 2018.
