(Baonghean.vn) - In June 2012, the United Nations declared March 20th every year as the International Day of Happiness. 193 member countries (including Vietnam) pledged to support this day through efforts to improve the quality of life, build a fair and sustainable society, and bring happiness to people.

It can be said that in social life, happiness is the destination of every person and people, regardless of historical period, always seek happiness and wish to be happy. Therefore, countries are joining hands to achieve the goal of happiness, to create harmony in the process of socio-economic development of the country, to ensure that people have a sustainable future. The United Nations' recognition of "International Day of Happiness" is a concrete step for countries to live in harmony and peace with each other, creating a happy world.

The International Day of Happiness was inspired by the idea of ​​Bhutan, a small country located deep in the Eastern Himalayas, which is considered to have a high happiness index based on factors such as health, spirit, education, environment, quality of management and living standards of its people. Bhutan is a country that has recognized the prestige of national happiness over national income since the early 1970s and is famous for implementing the goal of gross national happiness instead of gross domestic product.

The representative of Bhutan said that the need for this Day of Happiness is for all countries and people around the world to take steps to overcome the differences between countries and people around the world, and to connect and unite all humanity.

The United Nations chose March 20 as the International Day of Happiness because this is a special day of the year, when the sun is horizontal to the equator, on this day the length of day and night is equal - symbolizing the balance and harmony of the universe. Therefore, March 20 - International Day of Happiness also conveys the message that "Balance and harmony are one of the keys to happiness".

"Happiness can mean different things to different people. However, we all agree that it means working to end conflict, poverty and other unfortunate conditions in which so many of our fellow human beings live.

Happiness is not a frivolity, nor is it a luxury. It is a deep aspiration of every member of the human family. It should be denied to no one and should be available to all. This aspiration is implicit in the commitment of the United Nations Charter to promote peace, justice, human rights, social progress and improved standards of living.

To implement the goal of developing social security, building prosperous, progressive and happy Vietnamese families and responding to the International Day of Happiness on March 20 launched by the United Nations, on December 26, 2013, the Prime Minister issued Decision No. 2589/QD-TTg approving the Project "Organizing activities on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness on March 20 every year" to raise awareness of all levels, sectors, organizations, individuals, families and the whole society about the International Day of Happiness, thereby taking specific and practical actions to build happy families and happy communities of Vietnamese people; enhancing participation and coordination between all levels, sectors and people and the cooperation and assistance of domestic and foreign organizations and individuals in activities on the occasion of the International Day of Happiness.
