This group frequently targets families who have recently lost a loved one, using the pretext of offering condolences to gamble with large sums of money.

On November 11, 2025, the Criminal Police Department of Nghe An Provincial Police announced that they are temporarily detaining nine individuals on charges of gambling using the dice-shaking method.

Previously, based on intelligence gathered, the Criminal Police Department of Nghe An Provincial Police discovered a group of individuals engaging in the crime of "Gambling" in Cua Lo and Truong Vinh wards, involving individuals with prior criminal records and operating in a sophisticated manner.

Particularly noteworthy in the group is Hoang Dinh Son (born in 1974), residing in Truong Vinh ward (commonly known as Son "Chat," who has 5 previous convictions for crimes including theft, extortion, robbery, disturbing public order, and gambling, and 1 prior offense for illegal drug use).

Notably, the gambling locations chosen by the perpetrators were families whose loved ones had recently passed away. After the families had completed funeral arrangements, the perpetrators, using their acquaintance with these families as an excuse to offer condolences, organized gambling sessions, preventing strangers from participating.

The actions of these individuals affected the security and order situation in the area. In response to this situation, the Criminal Police Department mobilized its forces to effectively combat this group of individuals.

On the evening of November 7, 2025, taking advantage of the fact that a family in Truong Vinh ward had just finished funeral rites for a deceased relative, Hoang Dinh Son and his accomplices went to offer incense and then gambled using the dice-shaking method in a private room at the homeowner's house. While gambling, 9 individuals were arrested by the Criminal Police Department. The seized evidence included over 80 million VND in cash, 3 mobile phones, and other items.

Besides Hoang Dinh Son, eight other individuals, including seven residing in Truong Vinh ward, were also arrested by the police. These include: Nguyen Thi Kim Dung (born in 1973, with two prior convictions for theft and harboring prostitution); Nguyen Thanh Dung (born in 1973, with three prior convictions for intentional injury, gambling, and harboring or receiving stolen property); Vu Quang Khanh (born in 1978, with two prior convictions for gambling); Ngo Xuan Quyet (born in 1973, with one prior conviction for illegal possession of narcotics); Hoang Nghia Quynh (born in 1972); Nguyen Cong Lu (born in 1977); Nguyen Phuc Son (born in 1988); and Le Van Duan (born in 1972, residing in Dong Kinh commune, Ha Tinh province).

At the police station, the suspects admitted to their crimes. The case is currently under further investigation.
