Nghe An: Patient suffers eye injury from fish.
(Baonghean.vn) - Recently, the Ophthalmology Department of Nghe An General Hospital has frequently received cases of eye injuries, stemming from very unusual incidents.
Last week, a rather unusual case of eye injury was brought to the hospital for examination. Patient Nguyen Dinh Nhon, 64 years old, (Tan Ky, Nghe An), suffered an eye injury while pulling in a fishing net. A large fish weighing 3-4 kg thrashed violently in the net and struck the patient's eye, causing contusion of the left eyeball and minor bleeding.

Previously, on June 15th, the Ophthalmology Department admitted and treated patient Nguyen Xuan Tu (15 years old, Nghi Trung, Nghi Loc) who was suffering from severe pain in his right eye due to a snake bite. On his way home from school, Tu and his friend discovered a 1.5-meter-long rat snake in a rice field. While trying to catch the snake to prepare it for consumption, the patient was directly bitten in the right eye. A day later, the patient's eye was very painful. Upon examination, doctors discovered a 0.5 cm tear in the upper conjunctiva, exposing the sclera. Fearing that the snake venom might cause complications such as scleral necrosis, after 4 days of treatment, the patient's condition stabilized, and he was transferred to the National Eye Hospital for further examination.
Dr. Tran Tat Thang, Head of the Ophthalmology Department, said: “Preventing eye injuries is the most fundamental way to maintain healthy vision. To protect eyesight, it is necessary to strictly adhere to occupational safety regulations, wear protective eyewear in certain specialized occupations such as welding, rice harvesting, tire repair, etc., and in daily activities that we often overlook, such as shooting, birdkeeping, fishing, and fruit harvesting. Schools, community health centers, and workplace health facilities should provide training in initial first aid for eye injuries. In particular, when an injury occurs, after proper first aid, the patient should be immediately transferred to the nearest specialized ophthalmology facility to avoid unscientific self-treatment.”
