(Baonghean.vn) - At its peak, the province planted 1,106 hectares of mangrove forests. However, currently, this area is only 713 hectares.

On the morning of November 6, the Nghe An Provincial Red Cross Society coordinated with the Vietnam Mangrove Project Management Board to organize a conference on “Enhancing the sustainability of mangrove planting projects and reducing disaster risks in Nghe An province”.

Attending the event were representatives of the International Red Crescent Society and the Vietnam Red Cross Society. On the side of Nghe An province, there was comrade Hoang Viet Duong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.

After nearly 20 years of implementing the mangrove planting project, the mangrove forest area in coastal communes in Nghe An has increased significantly; at its peak, the province planted 1,106 hectares.

However, for many reasons, mangrove forests in the area have declined, currently remaining at over 713 hectares.

At the conference, delegates affirmed:Developing mangrove forests well at important river mouths and estuaries not only contributes to protecting dykes, embankments, ponds and lagoons but also creates a sustainable and biodiverse environment.

Representatives of localities with mangrove forests and Vinh University also raised difficulties in expanding the area and proposed solutions to protect mangrove forests....

The representative of the International Red Crescent Society in Vietnam called for efforts from all levels and sectors to strengthen management and protection of mangrove forest areas; at the same time, strengthen warning capacity, mobilize planting more mangrove forest areas according to programs and projects to contribute to the implementation of the country's mangrove planting targets and plans; proactively respond to climate change...

Nghe An has 82 km of coastline, under the impact of climate change, the province is often affected by natural disasters, storms and floods. Therefore, planting mangrove forests is very important for protecting the natural environment, preventing climate change, and preventing natural disasters.

Therefore, authorities and localities must not only plant more trees but also manage and protect the planted mangrove forest area in a sustainable manner, and at the same time have positive solutions in exploiting the benefits from mangrove forests.
