Nghe An: Child with 'elephantiasis' disease still has to take care of mother with epilepsy

(Baonghean.vn) - Not as lucky as his siblings, Lam Van Sau (49 years old) in hamlet 11, Quynh Thach commune (Quynh Luu) has had to carry many large and small tumors on his body since childhood, making life difficult in every way.

Những khối u khiến việc đi lại, sinh hoạt của anh gặp rất nhiều khó khăn.
The tumors made it very difficult for Mr. Sau to move around and do daily activities.

Mr. Sau slowly told about his past with sadness and helplessness: "When I was born, my body was normal and showed no signs of illness. Then a few red, itchy spots appeared, but my family thought it was simple, so they didn't take me to the doctor."

As he grew older, many bumps began to appear on his body, like blisters. The more he scratched, the itchier it became. After a while, his body was covered with bumps and lumps.

But the most miserable thing was the large tumor in my left leg that made it very difficult for me to walk and do daily activities. Although I really wanted to go to the doctor to find out the cause and get treatment, unfortunately my family was too poor, and my siblings' families were also in financial difficulty, so the disease just kept getting worse and worse.

Once he was eligible to go to Bach Mai Hospital (Hanoi) for examination, the doctors told him that he had neurofibromatosis. His disease could be cured, but each surgery would cost about 20-50 million VND and would require multiple surgeries.

Faced with such a huge sum of money, he had to take medicine to hopefully alleviate his illness and had to live with it ever since. As time went on, the tumors that appeared all over his body and legs seemed to suck all his strength, making him shrink, his gaunt face showing only the raised lumps.

Even more pitiful, in the family, his mother, Mrs. Dang Thi Nguyen (85 years old), is mentally unstable, sometimes awake, sometimes unconscious, sometimes wise, sometimes foolish. Furthermore, his youngest uncle, Le Van Nghia (born in 1978), is also not as smart as a normal person.

Tormented by illness, Mr. Sau also had to take care of his old mother who had epilepsy.

Currently, Mr. Nghia was kindly taken in by a brother in the South who took pity on him and took him to work on the coffee plantation to help his family. Now, only Mr. Sau and Mrs. Nguyen are left at home. Mr. Sau has a large tumor that has reached the ground so he can no longer do any work. His mother is old and often sick, and when the weather changes, she has epileptic seizures.

Discussing the family's situation, Mr. Duong Dinh Tuan - Head of Hamlet 11, Quynh Thach Commune said: "Mr. Sau's family is really in a difficult situation. The family has been poor for a long time. He has an illness like that and has to take care of his elderly mother, so the situation is even more difficult. The locality always creates conditions to help the family, but resources are limited."
