A 72-year-old woman living in the flood-stricken area along the Con River cycled 5km, carrying a 20kg bag of rice to the Nghia Hanh commune police station to have it delivered to flood-affected residents.

On October 4th, the Nghia Hanh Commune Police (Nghe An Province) announced that they had received a relief gift for flood victims from Mrs. Tran Thi Que (72 years old, residing in Dong Du hamlet, Nghia Hanh commune). The small gift, consisting of only 20kg of rice, deeply moved those who witnessed it.

Accordingly, on the evening of October 3rd, Ms. Que cycled more than 5km from her home to the commune police station, carrying a 20kg bag of rice. “My house was also flooded, but the water has receded today, so I can cycle. I don’t have much, but I’d like to contribute 20kg of rice and ask you to send it to our fellow villagers who are affected by the floods,” Ms. Que said, wiping sweat from her brow after the long cycling journey.

Nghia Hanh commune was recently merged from Nghia Hanh, Phu Son, and Tan Huong communes (Tan Ky district). The Con River flows through the commune for 30km. Due to the impact of Typhoon No. 10 (Bualoi), from the night of September 29th, heavy rain accompanied by floodwaters from upstream caused 18 out of 21 hamlets in Nghia Hanh to be submerged. In many hamlets, the water level rose to 8m, submerging houses.

"The locals say this is the biggest flood ever, they've never seen the water rise so quickly and violently. Most households have suffered heavy losses, and many people have to sit on their rooftops waiting for rescue," said Phan Duc Quang, Vice Chairman of the Nghia Hanh Commune People's Committee.

By October 4th, floodwaters in Nghia Hanh had begun to recede, allowing authorities to access many villages by road to deliver food supplies; at the same time, they appealed for donations to support the flood-affected people.

“Receiving this special gift truly moved me deeply. I feel sorry for Mrs. Que and the people in the commune affected by the floods. At this time, 20kg of rice not only signifies material assistance, but more importantly, it represents the spirit of sharing, mutual support, and solidarity among the people in the flood-affected area,” shared Captain Nguyen Trong Giang, Head of the Nghia Hanh Commune Police.
