Among the teams participating in the 2017 National Excellent Student Examination, Physics was the subject that left the most outstanding mark for the Nghe An delegation with 4 first prizes. In particular, Le Nhat Minh achieved the top score. With this achievement, 7 out of 10 students from the Physics team were selected for the second round of selection to join the national team for regional and international Olympiad competitions.
Meeting Le Nhat Minh in the first days of the new year, the 11th-grade student from class 11A3 at Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School said: “I am very happy with the results I have achieved, but this is really just the beginning. This will also help me to be more confident in the upcoming selection exam.”
Regarding the Nghe An Physics team participating in this year's national excellent student competition, although there wasn't any student as outstanding as Nguyen Tat Nghia or Cao Ngoc Thai in previous years, the students' abilities were very consistent. All 10 students in the team won official awards, with 4 first prizes, 3 second prizes, and 3 third prizes, achieving the highest record ever for the Physics team.
Besides the national top scorer Le Nhat Minh, the remaining members such as Tran Huu Binh Minh, Dang Hoang Long, and Nguyen Thanh Binh also achieved very high scores, ranking among the top in the country. In nearly 10 years, this is also the first time the Physics team has had an outstanding female student, Nguyen Thi Tra Giang, who three years ago won first prize in the provincial Physics competition for gifted students while attending Ly Nhat Quang Secondary School (Do Luong).
Ngo Thi Ha Trang, a student in class 12C2, is also an outstanding female student from Nghe An who won first prize in this year's national excellent student competition. Trang's love for history began when she was a junior high school student at Le Hong Phong Secondary School (Hung Nguyen). After passing the entrance exam to Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School, under the guidance of her homeroom teacher Bui Thi Bich Hau, she had even more opportunities to develop her strengths.
In 11th grade, when selected for the national excellent student competition team, Trang did not disappoint, excelling and winning second prize. In Literature, Ho Ngan Hanh and Cao Nguyen Quynh Trang were also outstanding, winning second prize (there was no first prize in the entire North). This is also one of the highest achievements in recent years, the result of many years of effort by both teachers and students.
In this year's national excellent student competition, Nghe An province had 101 participating students, all from Phan Boi Chau Specialized High School. With 88 students winning awards, Nghe An ranked 3rd nationwide (after Hanoi and Hai Phong). However, in terms of award quality, Nghe An was the leading province nationwide with an 87% award rate. Among these, 6 out of 10 subjects achieved a 100% award rate: Physics, Chemistry, English, Biology, Mathematics, and Geography.
In addition, there were many outstanding individual achievements, such as in Chemistry, where 2 students won first prize and 2 students won second prize. In Mathematics, all 10 students won second prize; in English, 5 students won second prize; and in Informatics and Biology, 2 students each won second prize… Besides natural sciences, Nghe An also continued to affirm its strengths in social sciences, including History with one student winning first prize, Literature and Geography with 2 students winning second prize, and many students winning third prize and honorable mention.

Commenting on this year's results, Mr. Ngo Xuan Phuc, Vice Principal of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, said: This year, the results of the national excellent student competition across all 63 provinces and cities nationwide have shown significant changes. Many provinces and cities have made remarkable progress, such as Ha Tinh and Binh Duong (the number of excellent students doubled). On the other hand, some provinces and cities with a long tradition of excellence have seen a decline in results.
In this context, the fact that Nghe An continues to be in the top 3 nationwide and has a high success rate in student admissions is a very proud achievement. To achieve this result, from the beginning of the school year, the school has developed a very specific plan for selection and training. In addition, dedicated, qualified, and experienced teachers have been selected to lead and guide the team.
Notably, 2017 was also the first year that the Department of Education and Training empowered Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted to independently create exam questions and select its team. Through this process, they were able to select deserving and capable students to participate in the most important exam of the year organized by the Ministry of Education and Training.
Besides the achievements of Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, the 2017 National Excellent Student Competition also marked the remarkable progress of the Vinh University High School for the Gifted team with 23 students winning awards. In particular, in Mathematics alone, with 2 second prizes, 4 third prizes, and 3 consolation prizes, the school was among the top 5 schools with the highest achievements.
According to Mr. Le Xuan Son, Vice Principal of Vinh University High School for Gifted Students: "Last year, the school implemented many innovations in the recruitment and training of gifted students. Based on that, we guided and created all the conditions for each student to develop their strengths."
With these results, over 20 students from Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted and Vinh University High School for the Gifted will be selected for the second round to choose the national team for the international competition. We believe that with the tradition of a studious region and high determination, there will be many more joys for Nghe An's education in 2017.
