(Baonghean.vn) - On the afternoon of November 24th, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development held a conference to implement the plan for organizing crop production in the spring of 2024 and the work on livestock development and animal disease prevention and control in the last two months of 2023 and the spring of 2024.

Grain production in the spring of 2023 reached over 1 million tons. Specifically, the spring rice crop covered over 91.2 thousand hectares, with a yield of 68.8 quintals/hectare, producing over 628.2 thousand tons compared to the planned 611.5 thousand tons (achieving 102.74%). Maize was planted on over 20 thousand hectares, including over 18.2 thousand hectares for grain production with a yield of over 94.1 thousand tons, and over 1.8 thousand hectares for biomass production with a yield of over 71 thousand tons. Peanuts were planted on 8,492.36 hectares in the spring of 2023, with a yield of 28.18 quintals/hectare, producing nearly 24 thousand tons.

Spring crop production plays a crucial role in determining the yield and output of crops and livestock for the entire year. Therefore, having identified the advantages and disadvantages for production, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has developed a plan for organizing spring crop production in 2024 and for livestock development and animal disease prevention and control in the last two months of 2023 and the spring crop of 2024.

During the implementation of the project, the conference assessed the advantages, difficulties, and developments of plant and animal diseases currently occurring in Nghe An, causing damage and affecting the productivity and output of crops and livestock. It was emphasized that, in order to continue the success of the 2023 spring crop, units and localities need to prepare thoroughly.

At the conference, leaders of the Crop Production Sub-Department and the Livestock and Veterinary Sub-Department reported on the results of crop production, livestock farming, and veterinary work, as well as disease prevention and control in 2023; and the direction for implementation in the last two months of 2023 and the spring crop of 2024.

Notably, African swine fever is currently developing quite complicatedly with 93 outbreaks in small-scale livestock farms, less than 21 days old, in 15 districts, cities, and towns. From the beginning of 2023 to date, there have been 149 outbreaks with nearly 7,000 pigs having to be culled. In addition, other diseases affecting crops and livestock such as avian influenza, lumpy skin disease in cattle, etc., have also occurred. In 2023, more than 30,362 hectares of crops were infected with various pests and diseases, including 25,208 hectares of rice.

At the same time, current events, political developments, and global economic trends also significantly influence and impact agricultural production nationwide, including in Nghe An province.

The goal is to achieve a food production output of 1.2 million tons in 2024.

After summarizing the results, difficulties, and advantages of the 2023 spring crop season, the conference outlined directions for implementing agricultural production in the 2024 spring crop season and for livestock development and animal disease prevention and control in the last two months of 2023 and the 2024 spring crop season.

Specifically, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development aims for a food production target of approximately 1.2 million tons in 2024. It's worth noting that the 2024 summer-autumn crop season faces numerous challenges such as adverse weather, pests, and low yields. Therefore, the 2024 spring crop must strive to achieve 703,625 tons of food to significantly contribute to the overall target for the year.

The conference also outlined key solutions for specific implementation in each sector, such as: arranging crop varieties and planting seasons, especially for rice, corn, peanuts, sugarcane, cassava, and various vegetables; plant protection and irrigation; field sanitation; application of science and technology; crop restructuring; and production linkages.

Specifically, attention should be paid to strengthening the application of safe food production processes (VietGAP, organic farming, etc.), and applying science and technology in the production of various crops to gradually build brands and trace the origin of products, thereby increasing the value of the province's agricultural products. At the same time, promote the linkage of agricultural production and consumption on e-commerce platforms to stabilize and boost production and consumption.

For the People's Committees of districts, cities, and towns, based on the production plan of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, and taking into account the characteristics of topography, land, climate, level of intensive farming, etc., of the locality, they should develop and implement a specific production plan for the spring crop of 2024 that is close to reality, in order to maximize the existing advantages.

At the conference, many high-quality presentations were given, emphasizing measures to improve the efficiency of agricultural production in Nghe An province. Concluding the conference, Comrade Phung Thanh Vinh stressed that, in order to achieve the goals set out in the plan, units and localities need to focus on developing plans, arranging crop structures, seed structures, and planting seasons appropriately, suitable to the specific conditions of each region. They must be flexible, decisive, and mobilize the entire political system to focus on directing production; maximizing and utilizing all resources to ensure the 2024 spring crop achieves the highest possible area, yield, and output, while ensuring safe and highly efficient production.
