These days, people in the coastal vegetable-growing areas of Quynh Luu district are busy harvesting and tending to their crops. According to the locals, for the past week, the prices of vegetables and fruits have increased significantly and demand is stronger than during the period after Tet, more than a month ago.

According to Ms. Ho Thi Quyet from Hamlet 6, Minh Luong Commune, currently, cabbage is being purchased by traders at 3,000 VND/kg, coriander at 10,000 VND/kg, and other vegetables such as spring onions and lettuce have also seen a significant price increase.

While harvesting coriander, Ms. Quyet said that one sao (approximately 1000 square meters) of coriander yields 5-6 quintals. At the current selling price of 10,000 VND/kg, she earns around 6 million VND. After deducting expenses of 1.5 million VND, she makes a profit of over 4 million VND in just 30 days of cultivation. However, she noted that this price is still not high compared to the peak prices of 15,000-20,000 VND/kg.

“After the Lunar New Year, vegetables were only priced at 1,000 to 2,000 VND/kg and were still difficult to sell, causing heavy losses for vegetable growers. Now, with stronger market demand and prices increasing many times over, it motivates farmers to take better care of their crops and prepare the land for new plantings,” shared Ms. Ho Thi Quyet.

Currently, in addition to leafy green vegetables, there is still a considerable amount of tomato available. It has been learned that although tomato consumption remains stable, the selling price has not improved compared to a month ago, which was between 4,000 and 5,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, residing in Hamlet 8, Minh Luong Commune, stated: "My family planted 3 sao (approximately 0.3 hectares) of tomatoes (Nong Huu variety), which we started harvesting just before the Lunar New Year. Unlike previous years, when tomatoes sold for 8,000 VND/kg, this year the price has dropped to 4,000-5,000 VND/kg, a price that has remained low since the harvest."

Mr. Ho Anh Dung, Chairman of the Minh Luong Commune People's Committee, said that the entire commune has more than 2,000 households producing vegetables on an area of over 380 hectares. This year, thanks to favorable weather, the vegetables have grown well, resulting in a bumper crop with an estimated yield of over 15,000 tons. According to Mr. Dung, vegetable farming has helped people in the area improve their economic situation. However, due to the abundant supply of vegetables on the market at times, the prices of various vegetables in the locality are affected. Despite this, intensive cultivation of vegetables and fruits is a traditional occupation of the local farmers, so the phenomenon of a bumper crop leading to low prices, and vice versa, occurs annually. Therefore, farmers do not stop production because of low prices; on the contrary, they continue to cultivate the land for continuous cropping, with the motto of not letting the land lie fallow.

Market research in several other vegetable-growing areas in Dien Chau district shows that traders are buying up vegetables directly from the fields more aggressively, and prices are also showing a significant upward trend compared to the period after Tet (Lunar New Year). As a result, all harvested vegetables are being sold immediately.

The coastal area of Quynh Luu district has over 600 hectares dedicated to vegetable cultivation, considered the largest vegetable producing region in the province. Thanks to their experience in intensive vegetable and fruit farming, local farmers grow high-yield vegetables year-round, ensuring a constant supply of produce for the market. Therefore, this coastal area is always bustling with farmers planting, tending, and harvesting vegetables. At times, when vegetable prices are high, each hectare can yield hundreds of millions of dong per harvest.
