Nghe An: Traders flock to buy Dien grapefruit
(Baonghean.vn) - More than a month to Lunar New Year. At this time, at Dien grapefruit gardens in Anh Son, many traders have come to place Tet orders. According to grapefruit growers, this year the weather is favorable so the fruit is more beautiful and of better quality than previous years.
Around the end of December, Mrs. Le Thi Hue's family in village 3, Lang Son commune is busy welcoming traders to buy Dien grapefruit. According to Mrs. Hue, previously on an area of nearly 2 sao of garden land, she planted some fruit trees but the economic efficiency was low.
In 2008, after researching and knowing the economic value of Dien grapefruit trees, Ms. Hue invested in planting 40 trees. After a process of focused care and applying the correct technical process, the grapefruit garden has produced stable harvests. In 2016 alone, with a selling price of 15,000 - 20,000 VND/fruit, each tree brought in an income of 1.5 - 2.5 million VND.
This year's Tet crop with 32 trees yielded harvests, the largest tree yielded 200 fruits, the smallest tree yielded 100 fruits, so Mrs. Hue's family harvested about 3,000 - 4,000 fruits for the whole crop; after deducting expenses, she earned over 40 million VND.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Binh's family in village 5, Cam Son commune is one of the pioneers in bringing Dien grapefruit trees to plant in Cam Son commune. Currently, her family's grapefruit garden is full of fruit, turning bright yellow and plump.
Ms. Binh said that this grapefruit garden has more than 20 trees that have been harvested for 4 years now. From October to December of the solar calendar is the time when Dien grapefruits are ripe. Right from the beginning of the season, traders from Do Luong and Con Cuong districts have come to buy the whole garden. Dien grapefruits can be preserved for a long time, the more withered the fruit is, the sweeter it is, so many people like it. Moreover, people's demand for consumption during Tet holidays has increased, so in recent years, grapefruits have always been priced well.

Currently in Anh Son, Dien grapefruit is favored by the market because the quality is not inferior to Hanoi's Dien grapefruit. The whole district has more than 40 hectares of grapefruit growing area of all kinds, of which Dien grapefruit is grown in many communes of Cam Son, Dinh Son, Hung Son, Vinh Son, Lang Son.
Realizing that Dien grapefruit trees are suitable for soil conditions, many localities have encouraged people to take advantage of suitable land areas to grow grapefruit in a commercial manner; typically, Lang Son commune has established 2 cooperative groups to grow Dien grapefruit, each group has 10 households to share and learn from each other's experiences. Thanks to that, up to now, the whole Lang Son commune has over 40 households participating in planting with an area of nearly 5 hectares, of which nearly 10 households have earned an annual income of 30 - 50 million VND.
To make Dien grapefruit more effective, the Farmers' Association of Anh Son district has promoted propaganda and mobilized cadres and members to build a model of concentrated commodity cultivation; coordinated with functional units to open training courses to guide farmers in planting and caring for grapefruit trees. At the same time, it has created conditions for members to borrow capital from the farmer support fund to help members increase their income in the locality./.
