Nghe An continues to establish inspection teams to combat illegal fishing.
Following the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment on focusing leadership and guidance on combating IUU fishing in preparation for the 5th EC inspection team, the People's Committee of Nghe An province has just issued the Plan for inspection, examination, and control of fisheries in 2025.
Specifically, according to Plan No. 62/2025/KH-UBND of the Provincial People's Committee, the Provincial People's Committee assigns the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the Fisheries and Fisheries Inspection Sub-Department to lead the establishment of an inter-agency team to maintain patrol, inspection, and monitoring activities in coastal waters to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The operation will run from March to November 2025, divided into several peak periods and campaigns.
The purpose of this inspection is to prevent and promptly handle serious violations related to IUU (Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated) fishing activities; to strengthen patrol and coordination activities of border guards, police, local authorities, and relevant units in combating IUU fishing; and to actively promote awareness and change perceptions regarding fishing practices in accordance with the 2017 Fisheries Law.
Patrol, inspection, and enforcement activities must be conducted strictly, honestly, objectively, and in accordance with the law, procedures, and work regulations; ensuring the safety of personnel and vehicles during the performance of duties. Proactively prevent, control, detect, and promptly stop IUU fishing activities, and strictly handle violations according to regulations. Harassment, inconvenience, and difficulties for organizations and individuals engaged in marine resource exploitation are strictly prohibited.
After focusing on reviewing and fundamentally addressing the issue of fishing vessels operating illegally without proper permits in 2024, in 2025, the inter-agency team will concentrate on inspecting compliance with regulations on fishing licenses, fishing in prohibited areas and during prohibited periods; the use of prohibited fishing gear and methods; the use of electric shock devices, explosives, and poisons for fishing; fishing in the wrong areas or with the wrong methods; failure to mark fishing vessels; failure to record, record insufficiently, or incorrectly, or failure to submit fishing logs, purchasing and transshipment logs; regulations on vessel tracking devices, and technical safety of fishing vessels…/.
