Nghe An: Buzz surrounding a strange jackfruit tree stump that, after its trunk was cut, suddenly bears an abundance of fruit.
(Baonghean.vn) - In recent days, people in Thanh Chuong, Nghe An province, known as the "land of jackfruit," have been abuzz about a strange jackfruit tree stump. The trunk was cut down a year ago, but it still bears a lot of fruit from the base.
This remarkably resilient jackfruit tree, belonging to Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thuy's family in Hamlet 3, Thanh Chi Commune, is located behind her house, bordering her parents-in-law's home. What's special is that the tree is only 30 cm tall and 20 cm in diameter, with no branches or leaves, yet it is surrounded by an abundance of fruit.

According to observations, there are currently 12 jackfruits remaining around the base of the tree, both large and small. Each cluster has 1 to 3 fruits, with the largest one being the size of a soccer ball. According to the homeowner, initially, the jackfruit tree had dozens of small fruits, then 16 fruits formed, and 4 of them have ripened and were picked and eaten by Mrs. Thuy's family and neighbors.
Ms. Thuy said that this jackfruit tree was originally a soft-fleshed jackfruit (sweet jackfruit), planted about 20 years ago by her father-in-law, Mr. Nguyen Nghia Vo (84 years old). In February 2016, Ms. Thuy's family hired an excavator to lower the height of the garden to 1.5 meters.

The soil around the base of the jackfruit tree was completely dug up, and in April 2016, Mrs. Thuy's family cut down the tree. In the autumn, fresh, green shoots sprouted from the base. When the branches were nearly 1 meter tall, some villagers came and cut them off to feed their goats. The base of the tree was left bare again.
Strangely, in early 2017, when the jackfruit season arrived, dozens of jackfruit suddenly appeared around the base of this tree, forming a circle. Ms. Thuy said: "I thought it was just fake fruit, but surprisingly, all the jackfruits set and grew normally like other jackfruit trees. The ripe jackfruits, when picked and eaten, still had large, sweet segments, just like the jackfruits before the tree was cut down."

The jackfruit tree stump, lacking a trunk and branches but bearing abundant fruit, belonging to Mrs. Thuy has become a strange phenomenon in this rural area. Recently, locals and many curious people from all over have flocked to Mrs. Thuy's house to see and take pictures of the stump.
Dau Ba Toi (24 years old), a student at Van Xuan University of Technology, said: "I find the jackfruit tree trunk strange because it's bare but still produces many fruits, and the fruits are still large. How can a tree with no trunk, branches, and few leaves photosynthesize to synthesize organic matter, and yet the fruits still grow so big?"
Since the unusual jackfruit tree started bearing fruit, many people have come to visit Mrs. Thuy's house. She added: "Since some young people in the village posted pictures online, many people have come to my house to see the jackfruit tree. Sometimes, people even come at night to film and take pictures..."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Lam (61 years old) - a villager from the same village, affirmed: "It's strange here that a bare jackfruit tree can bear so much fruit like this; I've never seen anything like it since I was a child."
Amidst the busy harvest season, many people from the "land of jackfruit" still take the time to visit the unusual jackfruit tree and take photos as souvenirs.
