Vietnamese clams and mussels are preferred by Americans over Chinese goods.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), in the first 6 months of the year, the total export value of bivalve mollusks reached 40.86 million USD, an increase of 1.6% compared to the same period in 2015. The EU, the US, and Japan are the three main import markets for this product, accounting for 85% of the total export value. In the three main markets above, in the US, Vietnamese products such as clams, oysters, etc. are more popular than those from China, Chile, etc.

Specifically, in the first half of the year, bivalve mollusc exports to the US reached 4.67 million USD, up 78.3% over the same period last year. With strong growth over many months, the US has taken over Japan's second place in importing this commodity and in the coming time, there is a tendency to increase imports of clams from Vietnam, while reducing imports of this product from major suppliers such as China, Chile...

Different from the above upward trend, in Europe, Japan, and ASEAN, the export proportion of this product tends to decrease by around 4-12% compared to the same period in 2015.

In the first 6 months of the year, bivalve mollusk exports to Europe reached 26.06 million USD, down 4.2% compared to the same period in 2015. Meanwhile, exports to the Japanese market only reached 4.22 million USD, down 12.4%. Currently, Chinese enterprises still dominate the Japanese market and account for 43-65% of the total import value.

In the ASEAN market alone, in the first half of the year, Vietnam only exported 1.79 million USD, down 22.7% compared to the same period in 2015. According to some businesses, the reason for the decline in exports is due to the lack of domestic raw material supply, so businesses focus on exporting goods to markets with better prices.
