In an email notification, the suspect faces charges of murder and attempted murder with terrorist motive. According to the latest information, Mechkah may participate in the trial via video link from the hospital after being shot in the leg by police and arrested on August 18th.
Police said the suspect appeared to be targeting women.
A video filmed by a local resident at the scene shortly after the attack shows a man shouting "Allahu Akbar" (God is great).
Police are investigating the attack as a terrorist act, and are looking into the possibility that it is linked to the truck attack in Barcelona, Spain, which killed 13 people. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the knife attack.
