After quitting their jobs as factory workers, the couple set up a company to fraudulently sell land and embezzle billions of dong.
A couple in Binh Duong quit their jobs as factory workers, set up a real estate company, and then fraudulently sold land to people, swindling billions of dong.
The Criminal Investigation Agency of Tan Uyen town police, Binh Duong province, is currently holding Nguyen Kieu Diem (38 years old, from Ca Mau) and Pham Van Thanh (39 years old, from Thua Thien - Hue, Diem's husband) in custody for investigation into the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.
Previously, the couple had been arrested by the Tan Uyen Town Police in coordination with the Hanoi City Police and extradited to Binh Duong while they were hiding there.
According to the investigation, Diem and her husband previously worked as factory workers and sold soft drinks, but later quit their jobs and established Gia Ky Real Estate Consulting and Brokerage Services Co., Ltd. (registered headquarters in Khanh Binh ward, Tan Uyen town), with Diem as the legal representative.

Despite not owning the land and not being authorized by the owner to buy or sell it, from May to December 2017, Diem and Thanh signed deposit contracts for land purchases in Tan Uyen town (Binh Duong province) and Trang Bom district (Dong Nai province) with seven individuals, each contract ranging from 40 to 100 million VND. From January to August 2018, these two continued to sign deposit contracts for land purchases with eight other individuals, each contract ranging from 50 to 250 million VND.
With the aforementioned contracts, the couple earned over 1.3 billion VND. When the time came to transfer ownership as per the contracts, Diễm and her husband failed to complete the procedures and did not return the deposits that the people had paid in advance, leading to a complaint being filed with the police.
After verification, the Criminal Investigation Agency of Tan Uyen town police issued a decision to initiate a criminal case and prosecute the suspects, but Diem and Thanh had left their place of residence. While hiding in Hanoi, the couple was arrested by the police.
