(Baonghean.vn) - For many years, Nghia Long commune market (Nghia Dan district) has been abandoned. Local people have used the kiosks as a place to store wood and cover to raise pigs and chickens.

Nghia Long Commune Market (Nghia Dan District) was built on an area of over 2,000 square meters, in Nam Loc hamlet. This is one of the projects under the Community-Based Rural Infrastructure Project, using capital from the World Bank (WB) and counterpart funds from Nghe An province. Put into use since January 2006, Nghia Long Market has not been as effective as expected. In the first years, the market only had sporadic trading activities and then gradually became less active. A few households received kiosks to sell goods for a few years and then abandoned them, leaving them abandoned. Photo: Khanh Nguyen

Mr. Vu Ngoc Toan, a resident living near the market, said that when it first opened, the market only met every two days, for a short time in the morning. At that time, the market only had a few kiosks selling simple groceries, and local people only bought and sold vegetables, meat, and fish. In recent years, Nghia Long market has been almost forgotten. Dozens of kiosks in the market area are closed, and the stalls are damaged and degraded. Photo: Khanh Nguyen

Locals have used the market house as a wood storage area, and a part of the market yard has been turned into a badminton court. Weeds grow all over the market grounds. Photo: Khanh Nguyen

Local people also “requisitioned” a corner of the market to raise pigs and chickens. A few kiosks are also used as temporary shelters to look after livestock and other property. The rest of the construction items in the market area are mostly degraded and shabby. Photo: Khanh Nguyen

Mr. Truong Cong Thuyen - Chairman of Nghia Long Commune People's Committee said that for more than 3 years, Nghia Long commune market has been "completely dead", without any trading activities; in the planning of the new rural area of Nghia Long commune, the criteria for building a market were not included. In the future, people of this commune will go to the market in the town (to be built according to the planning of the province) and markets in neighboring communes. Currently, the leaders of Nghia Long commune have made a request to change the function of the market to avoid waste. Photo: Ngoc Thuy
