Ms. Nguyen Thi My, residing in Hamlet 17, Nghi Trung Commune, planted 2 sao (approximately 0.2 hectares) of glutinous corn in the winter season. Although the yield decreased compared to the spring season, according to Ms. My, glutinous corn sells very well in late winter. The average price is 3,000-4,000 VND per ear (500-1,000 VND higher per ear than in the spring season). After deducting the costs of fertilizer, seeds, and labor, her family earned over 10 million VND per season from the 2 sao of glutinous corn.
The glutinous corn varieties primarily grown by farmers in Nghi Loc during the winter season are MX2, MX4, MX10, etc. These are high-yielding varieties with many advantages such as large ears, chewy kernels, and full, evenly distributed kernels from the inside out. The growing season is short (approximately 70-75 days), 35 days shorter than growing red corn for animal feed. With a planting density of 600-650 plants per sao (approximately 1000 square meters), each plant yields an average of 2-3 ears.

This winter, Nghi Loc district planted 500 hectares of glutinous corn. The area planted with glutinous corn in Nghi Loc is mainly concentrated in communes such as Nghi Truong, Nghi Thinh, Nghi Hop, Nghi Thuan, Nghi Khanh, Nghi Long, Nghi Phong, and Nghi Trung. Due to flooding at the beginning of the season, the yield only reached 15 tons of fresh corn per hectare (a decrease of 3 tons compared to the spring crop). With a total area of 500 hectares, after deducting the costs of fertilizer, seeds, and labor, Nghi Loc earned 55 billion VND this winter.
