The announcement was posted by the head of Iran's foreign affairs on Instagram: "I apologize to you for all the shortcomings... over the years during my time as Foreign Minister... I thank the country and the officials of Iran."
Meanwhile, the semi-official news agencyTasnimIran's state news agency said: "Several sources have confirmed Mr. Zarif's resignation."
However, it is not yet clear whether President Hassan Rouhani will accept Mr. Zarif's resignation. The Iranian government and Foreign Ministry have not yet made an official comment on this.
Mr. Zarif played a key role in negotiating and signing the nuclear deal between Iran and world powers in 2015. However, he has faced criticism and attacks from hard-line, anti-Western figures in Tehran after the US withdrew from the nuclear deal with Iran and reimposed sanctions on the country.
