Present in the coastal area of Dien Kim commune, districtDien ChauAt noon on September 26, heavy rain and rough seas caused high waves to crash ashore, sweeping away some of the fishermen's rafts and fishing gear; some other rafts were submerged in the engines.
Mr. Nguyen Van - a fisherman in Dien Kim commune shared: Since the afternoon of September 25, we have pulled the raft 10-12 meters from the shore, but the waves are rough and the tide is high, so today we have to mobilize forces to continue pulling the raft and fishing gear ashore, 20-30 meters away to ensure safety.
It is known that these rafts are all handmade by local fishermen, each one is made from 10 bamboo trees, then split in half with other floating materials such as foam, wood... behind which is placed the engine. The front part of the raft is curved, able to withstand thermal expansion and wind and waves. The raft is handmade so the structure is simple, when encountering big waves and strong winds, the raft is very easy to capsize.
Mr. Le Van Thong - Chairman of Dien Kim Commune People's Committee, Dien Chau District said: Dien Kim Commune has over 130 rafts of fishermen who mainly go fishing during the day. To ensure safety, from the afternoon of September 25, the commune requested fishermen to gather their rafts ashore.
Currently, it continues to rain heavily, the tide is rising, the commune is directing people to continue pulling rafts and other tools to safety.
A representative of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau district added: Dien Chau district currently has over 350 rafts, mainly concentrated in the communes of Dien Hai, Dien Kim, Dien Thanh, and Dien Hung. This is a traditional occupation of coastal people, mainly catching jellyfish, shrimp, and anchovies. During the rainy and stormy season, the district regularly directs communes with rafts to advise fishermen to keep up with weather information and absolutely not go rafting during the rainy and stormy season.
The district does not encourage communes to develop rafting, and requires rafts to be equipped with life buoys. When operating at sea, it is necessary to travel in groups to promptly respond and help each other in case of an accident.
