Fishermen in the coastal communes of Dien Chau district mainly catch seafood using small boats, operating near the shore. From the evening of the 3rd day of Tet (Lunar New Year), Dien Chau fishermen begin their first fishing trip of the year, and by noon on the 4th day of Tet, their boats return to the fishing port after a night of fishing. Due to the nature of near-shore fishing and short fishing time, the seafood, mainly shrimp, squid, mantis shrimp, and various types of fish, is fresh and popular with customers. Mr. Nguyen Van Manh, the owner of a fishing boat in Ngoc Bich commune (Dien Chau district), said that this first fishing trip of the year yielded 300 kg of various seafood, bringing in about 9 million VND. Some fishing boats caught 200-300 kg of scad, not to mention other seafood. With scad selling for 20,000 VND/kg, this first fishing trip of the year brought in over 10 million VND. Photo: Xuan Hoang

Among the seafood items popular with customers at the beginning of the year are shrimp, squid... especially the scad fish (or scad), which is highly sought after. Even at a price of 130,000 VND/kg, it's still hard to find because the catch is limited. Photo: Xuan Hoang

According to local fishermen, many customers from the city who are returning home for Tet (Lunar New Year) are buying fresh seafood at the port, leading to higher prices for shrimp, squid, and other fish compared to before Tet. However, according to the Lach Van Fishing Port Management Board, on the fourth day of Tet, only about 10 boats were out at sea, resulting in low yields. It is expected that most fishermen in Dien Chau will return to sea on the sixth day of Tet, leading to higher yields. (Photo: Xuan Hoang)
