Fishermen strike it rich with a haul of yellowfin tuna worth over 6 billion VND.

The first yellowfin tuna caught by the Le Van Vien vessel have been brought ashore.

Earlier, at 7:30 PM on February 10th, after a day of fishing at sea, the fishing vessel QT 90172, owned by fisherman Le Van Vien, 40 years old, residing in Xuan Tien village, Gio Viet commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province, which was using purse seine nets in the Con Co island area, caught a haul of yellowfin tuna, initially estimated at over 100 tons.

Before the big catch at the beginning of the year, Mr. Vien had to organize the fishermen of the village to fish together at sea, bringing the fish onto his boat and using a transfer boat to transport the fish ashore in batches. He expects to finish catching the large haul already in his net by the evening of February 11th. This is fisherman Le Van Vien's second fishing trip since the beginning of the Year of the Pig 2019.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Thuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Gio Viet commune, yellowfin tuna is currently priced at 60,000 VND/kg, and fisherman Le Van Vien's recent catch is estimated to be worth over 6 billion VND. Traders have already gathered at Cua Viet fishing port to buy up all of Mr. Vien's yellowfin tuna. Mr. Thuong stated that while many fishing boats from Gio Viet commune caught yellowfin tuna on this trip, Mr. Vien's boat was the most successful, with catches ranging from 10 to 15 tons per vessel.

Mr. Tran Van Quang, Chairman of the Gio Linh District People's Committee, present at Cua Viet fishing port, stated that the district's offshore fishing fleet and seafood catch account for over 60% of the province's total, with the largest concentration of fishing vessels coming from Gio Viet commune and Cua Viet town.

By nearly 11 a.m. on February 11th, Mr. Vien and the other fishermen had managed to bring more than 50 tons of tuna from the nets onto the boat.

Traders are buying up Mr. Vien's yellowfin tuna while also finding other buyers to resell it to.

Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Duc Chinh, along with the Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, were also present at Cua Viet fishing port to congratulate the family of fisherman Le Van Vien and other fishermen. Mr. Nguyen Duc Chinh stated that such a large catch demonstrates that the marine environment in Quang Tri has become safe again. Over the years, the province has implemented many policies to encourage and support fishermen in developing the marine economy, creating conditions for them to build new, repair, and upgrade their fishing fleets, resulting in higher incomes for fishermen from the fishing industry.

Two years ago, fisherman Le Van Tuan from Gio Viet commune, Gio Linh district, Quang Tri province also caught a haul of over 150 tons of scad fish in the Con Co sea fishing grounds.
