Ria Novosti quoted a commentary from SCMP newspaper stating that the new US House Speaker Mike Johnson could prevent the counterattack of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
"New US House Speaker Johnson is against further funding for Ukraine. House Republicans can simply reject President Joe Biden's request for aid to both Israel and Ukraine" - SCMP said.
New US House Speaker Mike Johnson does not support President Joe Biden's $106 billion aid package. House Republicans also believe that Israel should not be used as leverage to aid Ukraine.
Furthermore, regarding aid to Kiev, Mr. Mike Johnson emphasized that he wanted to know what the goals and "final moves" in Ukraine were, but the White House had not yet provided that information.
SMCP stresses that while Russia has proven capable of continuing to fight, military support from the West is a “lifeline” for Ukraine. And this dependence is ultimately unsustainable.
"If the US stops providing aid to Kiev, it is unlikely that Europe will fill the void. Economies across Europe have been going through difficult times, even in economic powerhouses like Germany," SCMP wrote.
According to SCMP, sanctions against Russia have not brought positive results. On the contrary, the Russian economy has not suffered any "fatal wounds". The growth rate of the Russian economy is predicted to increase to 2.5% this year - a rate far exceeding that of Germany.
"If economic sanctions do not work and military operations are fruitless, a ceasefire will be the only option," SCMP commented.
