Woman uses spiritual tricks to swindle over 5 billion VND.
(Baonghean.vn) - Knowing that the victims were well-off and believed in spirituality, Thuy hatched a plan to defraud them. Driven by greed, the victims transferred nearly 5.5 billion VND to Thuy on multiple occasions.
On April 29, the Nghe An Provincial People's Court held a first-instance criminal trial to hear the case against defendant Nguyen Thi Thuy (born in 1976), residing in Tang Thanh commune, Yen Thanh district, for the crime of..."Fraudulent appropriation of property."
In early 2019, due to a lack of stable employment and significant debt, Thuy conceived the idea of defrauding and appropriating other people's property to pay off her debts and for personal expenses.
Knowing that Bui Thi Hien worked as a shaman, built a shrine to the Mother Goddess in her house, had strong faith in spirituality, and was financially well-off, Thuy conceived the idea of defrauding her.

Thuy deceived Ms. Hien into believing she had inherited a vast fortune including: 189 billion VND, 5 luxury cars such as Parado and Audi, 15 high-end motorbikes such as SH and Exciter, 15 expensive mobile phones, and 15 gold bars from a family in Ho Chi Minh City.
Since the couple had passed away, Mr. Kien, an American citizen and relative, would handle the procedures for Thuy to receive the inheritance. Thuy urgently needed money, and if Ms. Hien transferred funds to Thuy to process the inheritance, she would receive 79 billion VND, along with many cars and motorcycles. Ms. Hien trusted her and transferred 742 million VND to Thuy in several installments.
Later, knowing that Hien's younger brother, Bui Huy H., also strongly believed in spirituality and had good financial means, Thuy conceived the idea of defrauding him. Using the same tactic, Thuy promised to give H. 57 billion VND, one car, and two motorbikes.
Trusting her, Mr. H. transferred a total of over 4.8 billion VND to Thuy. The majority of this money was borrowed by Mr. H. from many other people, causing them financial hardship as well.
At the trial, the defendant admitted to the crime. Thuy wept, expressing remorse and regret. The defendant confessed that due to debt pressure, she resorted to spiritual tricks to deceive the victims.
The panel of judges determined that the defendant's actions were dangerous to society and required severe punishment. The court sentenced defendant Nguyen Thi Thuy to 19 years in prison for the crime of fraud and appropriation of property.
