Locals caught a 'golden frog with a toad-like body and a bullfrog belly'.
After the first heavy rain of the season, a local resident caught a "strange" creature: yellow in color, with a head resembling a frog's, a body like a toad's, and a belly like a bullfrog.
On the afternoon of May 20th, Mr. Nguyen Son Trieu, residing on Pham Hung Street (Le Binh Ward, Cai Rang District, Can Tho City), reported that he had just caught a very unusual animal. This creature weighs nearly 1 gram and has beautiful yellow skin.
The animal was caught by Mr. Trieu.
“Last night, after the first heavy rain of the season, I checked the back door of my house and discovered a strange animal that had jumped in from the backyard. I caught it, put it in a basin, and covered it. At first, I suspected it was a bullfrog because of its swollen belly, but after looking closely this morning, it wasn't,” said Mr. Trieu.
Mr. Trieu added: "I don't know what it is at all. It doesn't look like a frog, it doesn't look like a toad, and it doesn't look like a bullfrog either. From its unusual coloration and the spines on its body, I don't think this is an animal found in Vietnam."
The animal that Mr. Trieu caught is a Pacman frog, which originates from South America.
Based on these unusual details, Mr. Trieu searched the internet and learned that it was a Pacman frog, originating from South America. He learned that when it was introduced to Vietnam, this type of frog was commonly known as the "alien frog" because its shape resembled a character in a science fiction alien film.
Currently, many locals, especially students, are coming to Mr. Trieu's house to learn about this frog. For now, Mr. Trieu says he will give the frog to his nephew to raise.
According to many pet shops in Can Tho City, this type of Pacman frog is very rare, only sold in Hanoi, and no establishments in the Mekong Delta currently sell them. Therefore, it is very difficult to buy them.
