Residents of Vinh City use car tires to 'patch' the road surface.
Residents of Nghi An commune (Vinh City), living along Duc Thiet road, said that for many years, due to the severe deterioration of the road, many households have had to use car tires to "patch" the road surface to reduce shock, prevent muddy conditions and potholes, and slow down heavy trucks that frequently pass through.
Mr. Pham Van Kien, a resident whose house is located on Duc Thiet road section passing through Hamlet 10, Nghi An commune (Vinh city), expressed his frustration: “For many years, the people of Nghi An commune, especially the students, have had to travel daily on a road riddled with potholes; they have to endure muddy conditions in the rain and dusty conditions in the sun, and they are always worried because dozens of heavy trucks rumble along the road from morning till night every day.”
Standing on Duc Thiet road, Mr. Bach Long Ngu - Head of Hamlet 10, Nghi An commune, "showcased" the potholes and uneven surfaces of the road, along with old motorbike tires left on the road by residents to "patch" them.
Mr. Ngữ said: “The Đức Thiết road was opened quite a long time ago, connecting National Highway 46 with many roads through the communes of Vinh City and Nghi Lộc District, facilitating travel for the people. However, for nearly a decade now, the road passing through Hamlet 10 has been deteriorating severely. The people have petitioned many times, but it has not been repaired or upgraded. The commune and hamlet occasionally only provide support by laying soil and gravel to mitigate erosion, but this only lasts for a short time.”
“The Duc Thiet road is a general term for the entire route connecting the communes and hamlets. Currently, the road passing through each hamlet and commune has a different name. The section of the Duc Thiet road passing through Hamlet 10, Nghi An commune (formerly Kim Tan hamlet) is now named Tran Van Quang road,” Mr. Bach Long Ngu further explained.
Ms. Ngo Minh Luong, whose house is opposite Mr. Pham Van Kien's, also expressed her frustration: "Heavy trucks constantly run along this road day and night. Besides the thick dust, when it rains, water splashes into our yard and house. There are no drainage ditches, and the road surface has become increasingly uneven, muddy, and dusty for many years now. We have to put up tarpaulins and curtains to prevent dust from entering our house. The students going to school often slip and fall when passing through this section of road, living in constant fear."
Direct on-site observation of the Duc Thiet road section passing through Hamlet 10, Nghi An commune, as well as many other communes and hamlets in Vinh City and Nghi Loc district, shows that most sections have been paved with asphalt. For example, the Duc Thiet road section through Nghi Duc and Nghi Phong communes (Vinh City), Nghi Thiet and Nghi Thinh communes (Nghi Loc district)...
Currently, only the section passing through Hamlet 10, Nghi An Commune, and some connecting roads to Duc Thiet Road passing through Hamlet 5, Nghi Thinh Commune, remain severely damaged and have not yet been upgraded.
“Through meetings and interactions with voters, we have repeatedly petitioned and reported to higher authorities. However, for more than three years now, over 90 households in Hamlet 10 have waited too long, hoping that the road will be repaired soon, ending the rough and muddy conditions that affect the lives of families living on both sides of the road; and threatening the safety of people and vehicles when traveling on this road,” said Bach Long Ngu, head of Hamlet 10.
Regarding the damaged and deteriorated condition of this road, Mr. Chu Van Mai, Chairman of the Nghi An Commune People's Committee, affirmed that the residents' complaints are accurate. The commune's leadership has also repeatedly reported the issue to the Vinh City People's Committee. In 2022, Vinh City issued a notice stating that Tran Van Quang road is included in the Vinh Airport expansion project's plan, and the local authorities are not allowed to independently repair or renovate it. The upgrading and repair work will be carried out by Vinh City.
“However, as of March 2025, there has been no announcement from Vinh City regarding road repair and upgrading. To help people overcome difficulties, the People's Committee of the commune has provided funding for residents to lay a layer of crushed stone to improve the muddy conditions and temporarily fill in areas that have subsided or peeled off,” Mr. Chu Van Mai said.
