The historic flood in early October buried large areas of rice paddies in Luong Minh commune (Tuong Duong district) under mud. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, the villagers went down to the fields to dig through the mud, searching for individual rice stalks, then carrying them down to the stream to shake off the mud.

"We worked hard all year just looking forward to harvest time, but then the flood came, carrying mud and soil from the streams and inundating the fields. This whole crop is a total loss. Today, I'm harvesting whatever I can, probably only about 30% of the yield," said Ms. Vi Thi Chom, from Minh Thanh village, Luong Minh commune. Photo: Dinh Tuan
