According to information from this newspaper on April 5, last month, Italian fishermen recovered a suitcase floating in the sea in Rimini, in the Adriatic Sea. When they opened it, they found a woman's body inside.

DNA analysis quickly revealed that the body was that of Katerina Laktionova, a 27-year-old Russian model.

Italian police opened a criminal investigation, but the results were shocking. The young woman had died days earlier from anorexia, which left her starving and debilitated.

It was her biological mother who put her body in a suitcase and let it drift out to sea.

Katerina's mother worked as a nurse in Rimini. By the time the police identified the girl, her mother had returned to Russia.

When the information was transferred to the Russian side, the 48-year-old mother sadly told the authorities that she had personally put her child's body in a suitcase and taken it to the sea.

The autopsy results also showed that the model had been dead about a week before being put in a suitcase and dumped at sea.

This information is also consistent with the mother's testimony: she suffered and pondered for many days next to her son's body before deciding to put it in a suitcase. She confirmed that her son died in bed in their rented apartment in Rimini, alone and weighing only 35 kg.

Model Katerina was reportedly hospitalized for anorexia in Italy for a short time in 2015.

Anorexia nervosa, or anorexia nervosa, is a type of eating disorder characterized by low body weight, an abnormal perception of one's appearance, and an obsessive fear of gaining weight.

People with anorexia know how to lose weight by actively fasting, using laxatives, appetite suppressants, vomiting or doing very heavy exercise to burn energy. In addition, they can use diet pills and diuretics.

The condition mainly affects young girls, with only about 10% of sufferers being men. Anorexia nervosa has a complex etiology, involving a combination of neurobiological, psychological and social factors; in severe cases, it can lead to death.

In 2006, the world was shocked by the death of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston at the age of 21. At that time, she weighed only 40 kg while her height was 1.72 m, her body mass index (BMI) was around 13.4, much lower than the allowed value. Ana was a model for the world famous fashion brand Giorgio Armani.

After this incident, many countries such as Spain, Italy and Brazil banned super-skinny models from participating in shows.
