Russian model dies of starvation due to loss of appetite; mother disposes of body in the sea.

The heartbreaking story was recently published by the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The mother, in her confusion, acted rashly.

According to this newspaper's April 5th issue, Italian fishermen recovered a suitcase floating in the sea off Rimini, in the Adriatic Sea, last month. Upon opening it, they found a woman's body inside.

DNA analysis quickly revealed the body to be that of Katerina Laktionova, a 27-year-old Russian model.

Italian police launched a criminal investigation, but the subsequent findings came as a surprise. The young girl had died several days earlier from anorexia, which caused her to starve and debilitate to death.

It was her own mother who put her body in a suitcase and set it adrift at sea.

Katerina's mother worked as a nurse in Rimini. By the time the police identified the girl, her mother had already returned to Russia.

When the information was passed on to the Russian side, the distraught 48-year-old mother confessed to authorities that she had personally put her child's body in a suitcase and taken it to sea.

The autopsy results also indicated that the model had died about a week before being placed in a suitcase and dumped at sea.

This information also aligns with the mother's testimony: she grieved and deliberated for days beside her child's body before deciding to put it in the suitcase. She asserted that her child died in bed in their rented apartment in Rimini, alone and weighing only 35 kg.

Information indicates that model Katerina was briefly hospitalized in Italy in 2015 for treatment of anorexia.

Anorexia nervosa, also known as psychological anorexia or psychological loss of appetite, is a type of eating disorder characterized by symptoms such as low body weight and an abnormal perception of one's own appearance, along with an obsessive fear of gaining weight.

People with anorexia are well aware of ways to lose weight, such as deliberately fasting, using laxatives, appetite suppressants, inducing vomiting, or engaging in strenuous exercise to burn energy; in addition, they may use diet pills or diuretics.

This disorder primarily affects young women, with only about 10% of sufferers being male. Anorexia nervosa has complex causes, a combination of neurobiological, psychological, and social factors; in severe cases, it can lead to death.

In 2006, the world was truly shocked by the death of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston at the age of 21. At the time, she weighed only 40 kg while being 1.72 m tall, with a body mass index (BMI) of approximately 13.4, far below the acceptable value. Ana had previously modeled for the world-renowned fashion house Giorgio Armani.

Following this incident, many countries such as Spain, Italy, and Brazil banned extremely thin models from participating in fashion shows.
