Ms. Va Thi Co, wife of Mr. Ly Ca Dinh, said that the purpose of preparing the land early is to push all the grass and stubble deep into the soil and let it rot. On the day of planting, just harrow it once. Doing this reduces pests and weeds, and the rice plants grow better. Photo: Xuan Hoang

To regulate water into terraced fields, people often use plastic pipes placed across the banks to lead water from the upper fields to the lower fields. Together with careful embankment construction, water retention in each field is ensured. Photo: Quang An

The water source for the fields is taken from the Kem Ai dam of Tri Le commune and partly from natural water flowing from the forest. Wherever the water enters the fields, the farmers use machines to till the soil. Photo: Xuan Hoang

The terrain in the highlands of Nghe An is generally mountainous and steep, so the terraced fields, or the process of bringing water to the fields, is truly a creative, hard-working and skillful act. The highlands change their clothes in turn during the harvest season, sometimes wearing the red and yellow color of alluvium, sometimes dyed with the lush green color of young rice, and sparkling with the clear water reflecting the sky. Mr. Lu Van Cuong - Chairman of Tri Le Commune People's Committee said that the locality has 450 hectares of rice fields, mainly terraced fields. Every year, starting from the end of November, farmers, especially Mong ethnic people, go to the fields to get water, clear the land, treat the fields, and prepare for spring crop production. Therefore, in November and December, the sound of tilling machines echoes in the terraced fields in the commune, creating a bustling and beautiful scene.
According to information from the Department of Agriculture of Que Phong district, in the upcoming spring crop, the whole district will cultivate 2,200 hectares, mainly terraced fields. Unlike other ethnic groups, the Mong people in the district often take care of their fields, so every year they prepare the land early, in order to carefully handle the fields to enter the successful production season.
