What successful people do during lunch break

September 19, 2016 16:47

They leave their desks, turn off their phones, eat lunch or catch up on reading and exercise to get ready for the afternoon.

1. Leave your desk

Even if they have urgent work to do during lunch, they still try to leave their desks for at least a few minutes. "In the worst case, if you have to work during lunch, choosing a different location can at least help you change the atmosphere, perspective and generate new ideas," says international business speaker Michael Kerr.

2. Create relationships

Make it a goal to have lunch with different people in your company at least once a week. Whether it’s to get to know them or to maintain relationships. “You’re bound to learn something new from them, and you might even make new friends or mentors,” says Ryan Kahn, founder of recruiting consultancy The Hired Group.

Many people skip lunch because they're too busy or just don't feel hungry. However, refueling at this time is essential. "Eating in the middle of the day, a few hours after breakfast, will give your body a boost of energy, increasing your blood sugar when your concentration is waning. This will help you get ready for the next few hours," Carly Schuna said on LiveStrong.com.

4. Exercise

Working out during your lunch break will boost your energy and sense of accomplishment for the rest of the afternoon. "Regular exercise, in addition to improving your health, reduces stress and improves concentration, all of which can have a positive impact on your work," says Kahn.

5. They review their morning work

Lunch is a great time to assess what you've accomplished during the day, Kerr says. If you're having trouble in the morning, remind yourself that you can "reset" in the afternoon, and set yourself up for a positive day.

6. Read books

Successful people don’t answer emails or read work reports at lunchtime. Instead, they read newspapers, blogs, and books. This helps them relax from work, and brings them a sense of joy and refreshment.

7. Get some personal work done

They can use this time to make calls, make plans, write thank you notes, or do any other personal work, after lunch of course.

8. Do what you love

Successful people also take advantage of this time to do things like meet friends, go shopping or go to the park. These are like mini-vacations, helping them relax and change their mood before returning to work.

9. Stop using electronics

Many people like to turn off all electronic devices to enjoy a quiet afternoon.

10. Plan your afternoon

After their lunch break, they can take a few minutes to plan their work for the afternoon. This will help them be more proactive and ready when they return to their desks.
