The Thanh people in Nghe An are classified as part of the Thai ethnic group.
(Baonghean.vn)- Voters of Nghe An province propose: Currently, in the districts of Quy Hop, Nghia Dan, Tan Ky, Con Cuong (Nghe An), there are people of Thanh ethnic origin living but there is no document regulating the ethnic composition of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam. Voters request the Government to issue a document guiding the recognition of the Thanh ethnic group as part of the Thai ethnic group, creating conditions for people to enjoy preferential policies on ethnic groups and mountainous areas.
On this issue, the National Assembly's Ethnic Committee responded as follows:
Thanh, Tay Thanh or Man Thanh are the names of a group of Thai ethnic group in Nghe An. Until now, Thanh people in Nghe An have been classified as Thai ethnic group and enjoy preferential policies like other ethnic minorities in the locality.

Regarding the issue of recognizing the Thanh group as Thai ethnic group: The Ministry of Justice issued Official Letter No. 3903/BTP-HTQTCT dated October 23, 2015 requesting the Ethnic Committee to give its opinion on the ethnic composition in civil status work, specifically the case of the petition to correct civil status from Thanh to Thai in Nghe An.
The Committee for Ethnic Minorities has issued a response document (Official Dispatch No. 1289/UBDT-DTTS dated November 18, 2015) in which it requested the Ministry of Justice to guide local civil status agencies to facilitate civil status correction for citizens in the above case in order to meet the desire to correct the ethnic composition in identification papers from Thanh to Thai of Thanh people in Nghe An.
This is a scientifically appropriate and legal action, creating convenience for management agencies and people in related personal administrative transactions and procedures.
