Nghe An rubber growers devastated by storm No. 2

(Baonghean.vn) - Storm No. 2 has caused 40 hectares of rubber trees in Phu Quy to fall; the total damage is estimated at about 9 billion VND.

In recent years, the negative impacts of nature such as tornadoes, rains, and storms have caused thousands of rubber plantation workers belonging to Nghe An Rubber Coffee Company Limited to fall into dire straits. The impact of storm No. 2 alone caused 40 hectares of rubber trees to fall, with an estimated total loss of about 9 billion VND.

For many years, 1.3 hectares of rubber trees have been the main source of income for the family of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoe, a worker at Nghia Xuan team - Tay Hieu I farm. However, storm No. 2 caused over 100 of her rubber trees to fall during harvest, and hundreds of trees to be uprooted.

"The workers' insurance premium and daily living expenses all depend on rubber trees; now many trees have fallen down, so the family doesn't know how to cope," said Nguyen Thi Hoe.

Not only Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoe’s family, but also thousands of workers of Nghe An Coffee and Rubber Company are currently in dire straits after storm No. 2. It is worth mentioning that most of the broken rubber trees were in the period of latex exploitation. In addition to the broken trees, 100% of the rubber trees on Phu Quy red soil were also in a state of being uprooted, uprooted, and stripped of branches. This greatly affects the latex yield in the following crops.

Ms. Tran Thi Bich Hang, a worker of Hung Nam team - Tay Hieu I farm, said: "The 2016 tornado also damaged many areas of tall trees. It was not until May and June that the trees recovered. We had not yet had time to rejoice because the latex yield increased when we encountered storm number 2; and every time we encounter a natural disaster like this, it takes a whole year for the trees to grow stably."

Nghe An Coffee and Rubber Company Limited currently has 5 farms including Tay Hieu I, Tay Hieu II, Tay Hieu III, Co Do and Dong Hieu Farms, managing over 2,000 hectares of rubber trees. The impact of storm No. 2 caused 20,000 rubber trees in the business period to fall down, the trees that were not broken also fell into a state of being uprooted...

Tay Hieu I Farm was the unit that suffered the most damage, with more than 20 hectares of rubber trees blown down by the storm. Of these, there were more than 9,000 commercial rubber trees and 1,000 basic construction rubber trees.
