| Passionflower is primarily harvested as a whole plant, including the leaves, so fruiting is discouraged. This is the fruit of the passionflower. It's called a cluster fruit because the fruit is enclosed in a net-like shell. Passionflower has sedative, antipyretic, and liver-cooling properties; it treats headaches and insomnia, often in combination with other medicinal herbs. Some sources indicate that passionflower fruit can be brewed into a decoction to treat dysentery; passionflower leaves can be boiled in water for bathing and washing to treat dermatitis, boils, and scabies. According to ancient medical texts, pennywort has a bitter taste, a cooling nature, and acts on the liver, spleen, and kidney meridians. It is used to clear heat, promote diuresis, reduce swelling, and detoxify. After harvesting, the pennywort is processed and bottled as a beverage. Photo: Tran Chau |
