(Baonghean.vn) - The prolonged heatwave over the past two months has caused severe drought in Bai Son commune, Do Luong district, and many other areas. Large areas of summer-autumn rice crops are at risk of dying from the heat. In response to this situation, the Do Luong Cement Plant, a subsidiary of Song Lam Cement Joint Stock Company, has organized the pumping of water from the Dao River into the dam system of Bai Son commune to regulate water levels and combat the drought.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang, former Chairman of the People's Committee of Bai Son commune, said that from July 3rd until now, the Do Luong Cement Factory has been continuously pumping water to save rice crops from drought. Initially, this precious water source has saved more than 100 hectares of rice in the severely drought-stricken areas of hamlets 1 and 2 of the commune.

“That irrigation water is truly as precious as gold, because the summer-autumn rice crops are in the stage of preparing to flower and develop. If we don't irrigate in time, there's a risk of crop failure, or even the rice dying from drought. This is the main production season of the year, so the support in pumping water to combat drought from the Do Luong Cement Factory is invaluable, and the local government and people are very grateful. We cherish this water source and are organizing its regulation appropriately to effectively combat drought,” said Mr. Nguyen Huu Quang.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Van, a resident of Hamlet 2, Bai Son Commune, happily shared: “We are very happy because for many days now, the Song Lam Cement Factory has been pumping water into the Da Ban dam, supplying water to our rice fields. Without water, our family's 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of summer-autumn rice crop this year would certainly have failed.”

Mr. Nguyen Huu Long, head of Hamlet 2 in Bai Son commune, said: “This year, our hamlet planted over 60 hectares of rice during the summer-autumn season. The drought had caused the fields to dry up and crack, and the rice plants were barely surviving. Thanks to the Song Lam Cement Factory pumping water from the Dao River, the fields now have water. Our people are very happy.”

Along with the rice paddies of the two hamlets in Bai Son commune, the fields of the people in Hamlet 1, Hoa Son commune, Do Luong district, also benefited, with water spreading across the fields. Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc (Hamlet 2, Hoa Son) couldn't hide her joy, saying: "With water in the fields and the cool weather today, we went to the fields to fertilize with potassium to encourage the rice plants to grow. Hopefully, there won't be a crop failure this year..."

According to Mr. Phung Van Long, Director of Do Luong Cement Plant (Song Lam Cement Joint Stock Company), following a proposal from the Bai Son commune government, after calculating a feasible plan, Do Luong Cement Plant deployed its pumping system to pump water from the Dao River to support drought relief for rice crops in the commune. From July 3rd to 11th, the pumps operated continuously, pumping nearly 80,000 cubic meters of water.3Water is being pumped to combat drought for rice crops in Bai Son commune. Water pumping to alleviate drought will continue in the coming days.

To operate the pumping system, the Do Luong Cement Plant spends approximately over 7 million VND on electricity each day. This is a timely action by the Do Luong Cement Plant to support farmers in difficult production conditions.
