In the media, historian Le Van Lan's name is sometimes associated with the title of professor, and sometimes with the title of associate professor.

It is known that historian Le Van Lan was recognized with a scientific position according to Decision No. 81-HĐBT, dated May 28, 1984, on the Recognition of Scientific Positions (Phase II) of the Council of Ministers, signed at that time by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Pham Van Dong.

Decision No. 81-HĐBT, dated May 28, 1984, on the Recognition of Scientific Positions (Phase II) of the Council of Ministers, was signed by the then Chairman of the Council of Ministers, Pham Van Dong.

This decision states:

"Based on Decision No. 162-CP dated September 11, 1976, of the Government Council on the system of scientific positions and standards for scientific positions in the field of university teaching and scientific research;

Based on Decision No. 271-CP dated October 1, 1977, of the Government Council on the recognition of the positions of professor and associate professor in the field of university teaching and scientific research;

Following the recommendations of the ministers and heads of departments with universities and research institutes, and of the chairman of the Central Review Council,

DECISION:

Article 1. The titles of professor are hereby recognized for 117 staff members and associate professor for 898 staff members engaged in university teaching and scientific research (list attached).

Article 2. Following this recognition, a State Council for the Review of Scientific Positions will be established to assist the Chairman of the Council of Ministers in the regular management of the recognition of scientific positions for university lecturers and researchers.

Article 3. The Ministers, the Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers, the Ministers of the relevant Ministries, the Chairman of the Central Review Council, and the officials named in the attached list are responsible for implementing this decision.

The list of recognized scientific positions is divided into two parts: Part A lists Professor-level positions (level II), clearly indicated as Professor in parentheses. Part B lists Professor-level positions (level I), clearly indicated as Associate Professor in parentheses.
Historian Le Van Lan's name is listed in Part B, Section XIV, interdisciplinary field of history, archaeology, and ethnology, with the entry number 671.
