Con Dao Prison has become an attractive tourist destination in Vietnam.

The Argentinian newspaper "Clarin" recently published an article about Con Dao Prison, which was famous during the resistance against the French and Americans as "hell on earth," and which has now become an attractive tourist destination in Vietnam.

According to the VNA correspondent in Buenos Aires, an article published on the Travel page of the newspaper "Clarin" emphasizes that Con Dao is an archipelago located off the southeastern coast of Vietnam. For more than a century, this place has been known as "hell on earth".

However, Con Dao is currently striving to develop tourism based on its potential strengths, including pristine beaches, primeval forests, and historical values.

The report states that Con Son, the largest island in the Con Dao archipelago, formerly known as Poulo Condor, is now a peaceful place. Each year, Con Son welcomes approximately 50,000 tourists who come to explore its pristine beaches, coral reefs, tropical rainforests, or observe its sanctuary for sea turtles. Additionally, visitors can witness firsthand the "ghosts" of a still-recent past behind the walls of the island's prisons.

Spanning just 52 square kilometers, this island once housed eight prisons. When the Vietnam War ended in 1975, the prison complex was closed. From its construction by the French colonialists in 1862 until 1975, 200,000 prisoners, mostly political prisoners, were held on Con Dao Island, of whom 20,000 died.

After France's defeat in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, Con Dao Island fell into the hands of the South Vietnamese government and continued to be used to imprison prisoners. In the late 1990s, Con Dao was restored to serve as a museum, documenting the brutal crimes committed by the French colonialists and their American puppet regime.
